(COLUMBIA, Tenn. –  April 8, 2019) - - -Columbia State Community College’s Department of Music presents “Hope is the Thing,” the spring student concert April 23 at 5 p.m. in the Cherry Theater.

The concert will feature Columbia State’s choir under the direction of Judith Morehouse, Columbia State associate professor of music. The program features poetry by Emily Dickinson set to music by Emma Lou Diemer, and works by classical composers such as Mendelssohn and Bernstein coupled with music by popular musicians like Coldplay, David Bowie and The Beatles. The concert derives ideas of hope from a wide-range of musical genres and is sure to leave the listener inspired and uplifted.

“The students are working very hard to meet the demands of the music and the ideas behind it,” Morehouse said. “I could not be more pleased with them, and I look forward to how they will perform.”

Morehouse is Columbia State’s most recent addition to the music faculty. Before coming to Columbia State, Morehouse performed for the international recital stage across Europe and Japan and on the national operatic stage, sat first chair with the Houston Symphony Chorus, and her compositions and arrangements for voice and chamber ensemble were showcased on national television. 

“I am excited about the opportunity to interact with the young singers at Columbia State,” Morehouse said. “I am thrilled to conduct the choir and hold the baton for this year’s concert.”

The concert is free and open to the public. The Cherry Theater is in the Waymon L. Hickman Building on the Columbia Campus, located at 1665 Hampshire Pike.
