Columbia State to Host Youth Summer Camps

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - May 22, 2018) - - - Columbia State Community College will host summer camps for middle school students on each of its five campuses during the months of June and July.

The goal of each camp is to increase students' understanding and encourage excitement for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Williamson Campus

Beginner Lego Robots - June 5-8
Participants will build several robots in this 3.5 day robotics camp that promotes learning the concepts of programming, engineering practices and teamwork through the use of LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Education Kits, and program development environment for hands-on building and programming activities. This camp is open for students ages 11 - 15.

Forensic Science - June 18-22
At this five-day camp students will learn the necessary steps it takes to become a forensic examiner, and will learn different methods of forensic science that real forensic scientists and crime scene detectives use. Students will have the opportunity to see how a real crime scene is worked. This camp is open for students ages 11 - 15.

Fun Tech - June 25-29
Participants will learn coding and programming concepts in a fun, interactive, exciting and engaging environment. Students will build a variety of apps using the Google's App Creation Software including drawing/doodle apps, gaming apps, photo booth apps that trigger a camera, math blaster apps and more. This camp is open for students ages 11 - 15. Students will need to have a Gmail account set up prior to camp - students can also bring Android phones or tablets for this event.

Differentiated Perspectives - July 9-13
In this camp, math will be introduced in creative ways - addressing topic areas such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Students will be involved in activities both indoors and outdoors, which will help them show how math concepts are a part of daily life. All necessary materials will be provided, so just bring your thinking cap and positive attitude to enjoy this fun-filled, interactive experience. This camp is open for students ages 11 - 15.

Students that attend a camp on the Williamson Campus should bring a lunch and drink daily.

Lawrence Campus

Math in Action! - June 18-22
The "Math in Action!" summer math camp provides an opportunity for middle school students to increase their knowledge of math through a series of fun, interactive workshops. Throughout the week participants will focus on how math is used in everyday life. The goal is for students to have fun, learn fundamentals and imagine a future in math. This camp is open for students ages 11 - 15.

Lewisburg Campus
