(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - March 7, 2018) - - - Columbia State Community College welcomes Christine Poythress and Scott Burt to the Cherry Theater stage March 29 at 4 p.m. for a classical vocal and piano recital that includes vocal pieces by nineteenth century Italian composer, Stefano Donaudy, and contemporary American composer, Lori Laitman.

"We are excited to have two of our own music faculty perform," said Emily Gaskill, Columbia State associate professor of music. "This will be an opportunity for others to witness the incredible talent we have in the Columbia State music department."

Poythress, soprano, and Burt, piano, are Columbia State adjunct faculty members in the music department. Members of Metamorphosis, a community piano ensemble, will perform works by Carl Maria von Weber, Gioachino Rossini and Claude Debussy in the recital. Student performers include Columbia State nursing student Emma Jane Farmer and home school students Kaitlin and Kolten Johnson.

While earning a bachelor's degree in vocal performance from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia, Poythress was a soloist with regional symphonies and a guest vocalist at local churches. She received vocal training at California State University, Northridge and studied with Hollywood voice teacher Seth Riggs. Poythress earned a master's degree in vocal performance from Belmont University. Since moving to Tennessee, she has presented vocal recitals at Middle Tennessee State University, Cumberland University and The Renaissance Center in Dickson.

During his graduate studies, Burt received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to perform contemporary piano art recitals. He has performed recitals locally and in London, England.

The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Columbia State music department. The Cherry Theater is in the Waymon L. Hickman Building on the Columbia Campus, located at 1665 Hampshire Pike.
