Continuing Education Offerings In January

COLUMBIA STATE OFFERS NON-CREDIT CLASSES IN JANUARY
Online Medical Transcription, Geographic Information Systems and more


Columbia State Community College's Center for Economic and Community Development is offering several non-credit courses during the month of January.

Introduction to Word 2007 covers topics such as how to create documents in Word 2007, editing documents, formatting text and paragraphs, formatting documents and creating and formatting tables. The class is scheduled for Friday, January 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The fee is $129 and includes text.

Introduction to GIS covers basic skills involved in using Geographic Information System software. Upon completion of this 30-hour course, students will be able to display data, search data, edit data, and produce simple maps. In addition, students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned to projects similar to what they would do back at their jobs. The $399 fee includes 30 hours of instruction, a text book and Continuing Education credits. This class will be held for 10 Tuesdays beginning January 12 and continuing thru March 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Intermediate GIS teaches students what a geodatabase offers for GIS data storage, how to create and edit geodatabase features, how to design a GIS database, how to edit spatial and attribute data, and how to use spatial analysis functions and geoprocessing. The $399 fee includes 30 hours of instruction, a text book and Continuing Education credits. This class will be held for 10 Mondays beginning January 11 thru March 15 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Columbia State's Center for Economic and Community Development has partnered with Oak Horizons, Inc. to deliver an online medical transcription program. Medical transcription is a healthcare profession that is in great need of knowledgeable and skilled professionals. This online program has been prepared by experienced professionals who have been owners of successful medical transcription companies and a medical transcription school. The medical transcription program involves an intense curriculum that prepares individuals to be employable and achieve their financial goals. The program consists of six consecutive blocks. Each block contains four to five courses and will take about six weeks to complete. A student will complete 905 cumulative hours of study during the program. Oak Horizons regularly networks with various employers to document skill needs and program value. This class will begin on Monday, January 18.

The Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC™) Credential course involves specialty medical coding in evaluation and management. It will prepare the coder with sufficient experience and expertise in the evaluation and management coding for their Certified Evaluation and Management Coder exam offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders.

This course will include instructions on:
• The three key components with emphasis on Medical Decision Making (MDM) and other subjective aspects of the Documentation Guidelines.
• Rules and regulations of Medicare billing including (but not limited to) incident to teaching situations, shared visits, consultations, and global surgery.
• Coding per National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI), International Classification Diseases-9th Edition Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Modifiers and both the 1995 and 1997 Documentation Guidelines.
• Time-based coding.
• Risk assessment, including but not limited to the ability to benchmark, identity problematic situations and missed billing opportunities.
• Hands-On Evaluation and Management chart auditing.

The course is preapproved for 2.4 Continuing Education Units by the American Academy of Professional Coders and is led by a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) with a specialty credential in Evaluation and Management Coding (CEMC). The fee of $595 includes 24 class hours and a textbook. This class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on January 5 thru January 28 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Resume Writing discusses how to write a resume in a way that will increase its impact and effectiveness in the job search. Included will be the use of a proper format to best represent your skills, education, background and work experience regarding a particular job you are interested in getting, the use of words in the resume to better represent accomplishments and the use of a cover letter to leave the desired impression on key decision makers. The fee for the course is $69 and all class materials are included. The class will take place on Tuesday, January 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The Essentials of Leadership course teaches students to evaluate the use of important leadership behaviors and identify leadership strengths and areas for development, assess communication skills and develop particular skills they want to develop further. It also teaches the interaction process, Key Principles, Interaction Guidelines and process skills, to achieve critical business objectives while enhancing working relationships, and to use a technique to provide meaningful, supportive feedback. The fee of $99 includes the text and all class materials. The class will be held on Wednesday, January 13 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Fundamentals of Real Estate covers a large portion of the Tennessee Real Estate Commission's pre-license course requirements. Topics include the real estate business, agency relationships, contracts, valuation and finance. The cost of the course is $330 and includes text and 6.0 Continuing Education units. The class is scheduled for 15 Mondays beginning January 11 and running through April 19 from 5:30 p.m. until 9:40 p.m.
