COLUMBIA STATE PRESENTS INFORMATION ON CAREER OPTIONS

Free Information Session on Medical Coding and Medical Transcription
(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Oct. 14, 2011) - - - Columbia State Community College's Center for Economic and Workforce Development is offering a free information session for its Online Medical Coding and Online Medical Transcription classes. The session will take place Monday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. in room 146 of the Waymon L. Hickman building on the Columbia campus.
Online Medical Coding is a class that will teach students to be a skilled, job-ready medical coder. Medical coders are professionals skilled in classifying medical data from patients' records. The coding practitioners review patients' records and assign numeric codes for each diagnosis and procedure. Coders find employment in hospitals, physician offices, same day surgical centers, multi-specialty clinics and insurance companies.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that medical coding and billing will remain among the top fastest growing occupations for many years to come. Over 500,000 practicing physicians and hospitals in the United States rely heavily on medical coders and billers for customer services, and more importantly, to get paid for their medical services.
Online Medical Transcription is a class that teaches students to amend patients' records, edit documents from speech recognition systems, and identify discrepancies in medical reports. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow by 11 percent from 2008 to 2018. Demand for medical transcription services will continue to be spurred by a growing and aging population. Older age groups receive proportionally greater numbers of medical tests, treatments and procedures that require documentation. A high level of demand for transcription services also will be sustained by the continued need for electronic documentation that can be shared easily among providers, third-party payers, regulators, consumers and health information systems.
