COLUMBIA STATE OFFERS NON-CREDIT COURSES IN AUGUST

Computer Training, EMS, Medical Coding, & Online Paralegal Training available

Columbia State's Center for Economic and Workforce Development is offering several non-credit courses during the month of August, covering a wide range of professional development topics.

"Introduction to Excel 2007" teaches the student how to get started with Excel 2007 and work with formulas and functions. The class will be held on the Columbia campus on Friday, August 27 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The fee of $129 includes the textbook.

"Online Medical Coding" is offered through a partnership with Oak Horizions. The program consists of six consecutive blocks, and will take about six weeks to complete. A student will complete 950 cumulative hours of study during the program. Oak Horizons regularly networks with various employers to document skill needs and program value. The class will begin on Monday, August 23, 2010. The fee of $1,999 does not include textbooks.

The "Basic Medical Coding" live lecture format class will prepare a student to 1) analyze medical records and assign codes to medical conditions, symptoms, diseases, lab, x-ray, surgery and diagnoses, 2) establish proper documentation for billing any code to an insurance company to maintain accuracy is important to the coder, 3) understand how components of the documentation will be applied. The training involves 90 classroom hours, and each student should be prepared to spend an additional 20-30 hours per week in self-study. The course prepares students to take a nationally recognized certification exam. The tuition of $2,495 includes textbooks and exam. Classes start as early as August 2. "Advanced Medical Coding" live lecture format develops the ability to transfer previously learned knowledge with a wide array of cases from across medical specialties. The course will consist of coding actual reports and case studies and provide a realistic picture of coding on the job. The 17-week course will encompass 10 weeks of general medical specialty training, plus seven weeks of a specific specialty coding class of choice that will prepare a student to sit for a nationally recognized specialty examination for certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders. A person should have a CPC or CPC-A credential or a previous basic medical coding class, or at least one year of coding experience to take this class. The tuition for the class is $2,495. "Online Paralegal Career Advancement Certificate" trains the students to interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, prepare legal documents, and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. Topics include legal terminology, introduction to the evidentiary predicate, identifying relevant authority, legal research, and legal writing and appellate procedure. The class is scheduled to begin August 23, 2010. The fee of $1,189 does not include textbook. (Students are also required to purchase texts, approximately $340).

The "Resume Writing" course will teach students how to write a resume in a way that will increase its impact and effectiveness in the job search. The class is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The fee of $69 includes all class materials.

The "Essentials of Leadership" course will teach participants to 1) evaluate your use of important leadership behaviors and identify leadership strengths and areas for development, 2) assess communication skills and particular skills to develop further, 3) use the interaction process, Key Principles, Interaction Guidelines and process skills, to achieve critical business objectives while enhancing working relationships, and 4) use a technique to provide meaningful, supportive feedback. The class is scheduled for Wednesday, August 4, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The fee of $99 includes the text and all class materials.

The "EMT Refresher" is a twenty-four hour course that provides participants with a review and update on the care and treatment of medical trauma emergencies. Participants completing this course will meet the refresher requirements for re-certification with the National Registry. Participants completing the course will receive 2.4 continuing education units. Participants must register at least two weeks before the class begins on August 2. The fee is $120.

The "Internet/email Basics" course will teach you how to get started with email, send and receive messages, and use popular email tools in a four-hour seminar. The class is scheduled for Friday, August 13 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. There is no textbook required for the course and the fee is $59.

The "Administrative Dental Assistant" is nationally recognized as an online certificate program that teaches the essential administrative tasks for managing the business aspects of a dental practice and becoming an Administrative Dental Assistant. The program includes instruction in dental terminology and anatomy, medical records management, accounts receivable and reimbursement management, insurance and patient billing, patient scheduling, and procedural and diagnostic coding. The Administrative Dental Assistant online program will prepare you for a new career working in a dental office. The program will take 150 hours complete. The fee of $1,595 includes all materials, including textbooks.

The "Pharmacy Technician" is nationally recognized as an online course and training program that teaches the skills needed to gain employment as a Pharmacy Tech in either the hospital or retail setting. The objective of the Pharmacy Technician Program is to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to qualify for entry-level positions in pharmacies as well as prepare for national certification. It will take 240 hours of course work to complete the program. The fee of $1,795 includes all materials.
