Faculty, staff and students at Columbia State Community College celebrated homecoming with festivities beginning on Tuesday, February 2 and ending with a 81-39 victory by the Chargers men's basketball team against Dyersburg on Saturday, February 6.

"It was good to play in front of a nice crowd. We're just taking it one game at a time-we have four games until the TCCAA tournament," said Jay Joyner, Chargers interim men's basketball coach. "We're just trying to finish the season strong. Hopefully everyone can come out and support us during the regional tournament March 3-7. A lot of people came out to show their support at the homecoming game."

Homecoming week festivities included Xbox Game Zone competitions at both the Columbia and Williamson County Campuses where students were able to check out the latest technology in video games and compete for prizes, a pizza party where students participated in games such as twister and a hula hoop competition, the Chargers Spirit Banner Signing, voting for king and queen and of course the basketball games and presentation of the homecoming court and crowning of the homecoming queen and king.

"Homecoming is a long-standing tradition of events to hype up game day for the students and athletes. The week's events provided a venue for the students to get excited, encourage the team, have a little fun, and also promote service to the community," said Kathryn Gum, administrative secretary for student services at Columbia State.

This year's homecoming court was composed of Columbia State students Jeffrey Dickenson, Lesley King, Brooke Thompson, Cory Searls, Caitlin Young, and Dan Reed. Kirstin Agent was crowned 2010 Homecoming queen by 2009 Homecoming queen Kristen Surrat and Student Government Association President, John Troy was enthroned as this year's Homecoming King by last year's king, Daniel Johnston. Columbia State Community College President Dr. Janet Smith also participated in the Homecoming Festivities. Smith extended a warm welcome and did the honor of placing the sashes on the king and queen. She also presented the queen with a bouquet of red roses during her moment of fame.

"I am excited and thankful that the students of Columbia State voted me Homecoming King. I can't wait to see what's next," said Troy. "I'm really excited about being voted queen," added Agent.
