Columbia State Community College graduate Makayla Scott was awarded a scholarship by the Maury County chapter of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. This was the first such scholarship to be awarded by the GFWC of Maury County.
“We are pleased to have made the first award of the newly established GFWC of Maury County Women’s Club Scholarship,” stated Bethany Lay, vice president of advancement and executive director for the Columbia State Foundation. “We appreciate GFWC’s focus on community and supporting women of Maury County.”
Scott was awarded the scholarship during the Virtual Student Honors Convocation event hosted by Columbia State. This award coincides with Scott earning an Associate of Science degree in agricultural business this past May. Scott will use the award while attending the University of Tennessee, Martin to pursue a degree in agriculture business.
“I am very honored to have received the GFWC scholarship and it will be very helpful in my journey at the University of Tennessee, Martin,” Scott said. “I have been eager to learn about agriculture my whole life as no matter where you look, agriculture is involved somehow. This area has always been a big part of my life because I live on my family’s cattle farm, and it has always been something that interests me. When learning about agriculture, I can never seem to get enough, and I am always eager to learn more.”
The GFWC is an international women’s organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. Scott, a lifelong Maury County resident, was selected for combining these civic standards with high academic achievement.
“I am very thankful for the GFWC and how they serve our community, and I am very grateful to have received this scholarship,” Scott said. “I too try to serve my community as well as my church any way I can.”
