Join Professor Lenig for a winsome appreciation of one of America's most prominent collage artists, Betye Saar. Saar was an important artist of the civil rights era advancing issues in the African American community, but she is also a delightful, playful, creative and fun artist. Her work derived from kitsch objects, throw-aways and common household items amuses millions of people. Her liberation of Aunt Jemima is a funny coupling of the classic household product with a new portrayal of the classic advertising character as a liberator and warrior woman. For those of you unfamiliar with collage art and assemblage, the style became popular with artists such a Kurt Schwitters and Joseph Cornell in the early and mid century but Saar makes the form totally her own.
